THE GRAND PRIX INTERNATIONAL OF SEA KAYAKS

Despite its appearance, this is a difficult circuit(cross- currents, deep waters) of around 11 nautical milles (4 nautical milles for children) linking the 3 ports of the bay. The craft are subject to precise rules, (FFCK). This race against the clock is exclusively for members of FFCK or FIC, classed by 2003 categories.

These races are run on the sea and are only for sea boats(sea kayak and outrigger canoe)
Définition of boats :
The Sea kayaks which can compete are :
- boats in which you are sitting or kneeling
- boats propelled by one or several double-bladed paddle (kite and sail forbidden) these double-bladed paddles mustn't be bound to the boat (except leach)
- minimum length of 4 meters - minimum weight of 13 kg for kayaks single and 21 kg for kayaks doubles. If the weight is topped up by a ballast, this one must be immovably attached to the boat and mustn't be dismantled without tools
- boats with a system which avoids the paddlers to slide to the bow of the boat (foot rest or other system)
- boat equipped with a safe line with at least six fastening points on each side, with a diameter superior or equal to 5mm and must be strong enough for the boat to be towed (except outrigger canoe)
- boat equipped with bow and stern grab loop enabling to lift or tow it (grab loop allowing a hold passage of 8cm x 8 cm x 2,5 cm)
- a floating rope(for tug)must be present during thre race (with a - diameter superior or equal to 5mm) fastened to the bow handle, and long enough by the paddler to be easily accessible. It will be solidary to the navigation boat and at the end of it, a buckle must be present so as to be tightened to a swivel. This allows a quick towing by a security boat.
- Boat equipped with bow and stern watertight parts with caps allowing the draining in the case of decked boat. These caps will be firmly fastened to the boat so that they cannot get lost.
- A boat which can drain itself mut be equipped with a similar cap
Outrigger canoes which can compete are :
- boats in which one is sitting or kneeling
- boats propelled by one or several single- bladed paddles (kite and sail forbidden) these single-bladed paddles mustn't be bound to the boat (except safety paddle)
- main hull(except float and arm of connection) of an OC-1 (outrigger canoe for one person)
- minimum weight of 15kg for the main hull of an OC-1 (except float and arm of connection) and minimum weight of 150kg for the main hull of an OC-6 (except float and arm of connection)
- the OC-6 's arm of connection between the float and the main hull must be made of wood except for OC-1. The construction of the arm is free. The binding's system and materials are free .
- the boat mustn't have steering rudder (blades…)
- foot rests are forbidden
- outrigger canoes are equipped with two watertight parts(bow and stern) with caps allowing draining
- a floating rope (for tugging) with a diameter of 10 mm for OC-6, 5mm for OC-1 and with a minimum length equal to that of the boatmust be fastened to a peg or ring in the bow. The floating rope can also be fasten to the arm of connection (Polynesian painter). It must be ready to used and quickly released and a buckle must be present so as to be tightened to a swivel. This allows a quick tugging by a security boat
- boat equipped with a compass ready for use
- the bailer is required
- the watertight spray decks are required boats and equipment will be checked before the start so as to check their conformity with these rules.
- Boats may be checked any time
Conditions to enter the race
To compete, there are some rules like
- the practice level
- a good knowledge of rescue technique
- " green paddle " is compulsory but " blue paddle " is advisable for foreigner competitor (see "coloured paddles" page "rallye de la baie des phoques"
Competitors must
- have a medical certificate stating that sport (kayak competition) can be practiced have an insurance or FFCK membership card and must show it during the confirmation of registration
Categories and race distances :
ranking in these following categories : K1 female child / distance 7km K1 female " open "(junior, senior, veteran) / distance 14km K1 male child / distance 7km K1 male junior / distance 14 km K1 male senior / distance 21km K1 male veteran 1 / distance 21 km K1 male veteran 2 / distance 21 km K1 male veteran 3 / distance 21 km K2 male junior and senior / distance 21 km K2 male veteran / distance 21 km K2 mixed and female " open "(every categories except child) / distance 21km OC-1 male / distance 21 km OC-6 mixed, male and female / distance 21 km OC-1 female / distance 14 km
Categories of ranking
The age which we consider is the age of this year : Child (15 and 16 years) Junior (17 and 18 years) Senior (19 and 34 years) Veteran1 (35 and 39 years) Veteran 2 (40 and 49 years) Veteran 3 ( 50 years and over)
